About the App
Shootin' Star is an iOS shot timer designed for dry-fire practice. It uses your iPhone's microphone to detect the sound of a shot and measures your draw-to-shot time with precision. An Apple Watch companion app lets you control the timer from your wrist.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
The timer isn't detecting my shot.
Try increasing the Sensitivity setting in the Settings sheet. If you're in a quiet environment, even a small increase can help. Also check that you've granted microphone permission to the app in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. -
The timer triggers too easily / false starts.
Lower the Sensitivity setting. You can also use the "Ignore for" setting to tell the timer to ignore sounds for a short window right after the beep — useful if holster or gear noise is causing false triggers. -
The Apple Watch haptic and the iPhone beep aren't in sync.
Open Settings in the app and adjust the "Beep delay" slider under Apple Watch. Increase it gradually until the haptic and beep feel simultaneous. Bluetooth timing can vary, so some experimentation is normal. -
The Watch app doesn't stay lit during a session.
Due to Apple Watch platform limitations, the screen may dim after a period of inactivity even during a session. This is a known limitation for non-workout apps on watchOS. -
My session data disappeared.
Session history is stored locally on your device. Deleting and reinstalling the app will erase all session data. There is currently no cloud backup. -
How do I export my session data?
In the Sessions list, swipe right on any session to reveal PDF and CSV export options. The Progress tab also has a share button to export a snapshot of your trends chart. -
The app requires microphone permission — why?
The timer listens for the sound of a shot to measure your reaction time. The microphone is only active during a timing session and no audio is ever recorded or transmitted.
